"I had been kicking around the guitar riff to ‘Hear Me Out’ for probably six or seven years. Subconsciously I think. I’ll get into a trance like state when I’m just laying on the couch playing guitar and ideas sort of reappear over and over again and I think they are stupid and discard them, only to have them stubbornly reappear in my musical psyche out of nowhere like a year later. Oh that dumb idea again. Goodbye.
However one day we were wrapping up practice and I felt confident about the phrase and just started playing it. I had been listening to a lot of Oasis oddly enough that week, and felt inspired to try to emulate their brand of unabashed simple Beatles derived pop. And this was not a characteristic habit of mine to say the least! After Corina left, I just sat down and wrote the lyrics and the melody basically in the time it took her to walk home. And she only lives a half mile away. The lyrics are sort of silly but I meant them very earnestly as a love letter of sorts to our band and the potential we have. Within an hour I had all the parts more or less demoed, including the song’s key element in my mind — Corina's tambourine part ripped directly from “You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.”
When it came time to record it, I knew it was in need of an instrumental build. So I recruited Liquor Radio’s Coralie Colmez to lend us her beautiful violin playing, and crafted a drum part with Alex Cohen for the back half of the song — which includes my bass playing. I’m really proud of this song, and it continues to shock, please and frustrate me that the best songs come together quickly and without much labor. This one was just sitting in the vortex until I pulled out of the air and dressed it up a little bit. The whole process was very rewarding."
