Brooklyn-Based Acoustic Duo Reimagines Traditional Folk Classic In Latest Release

In their new single “Bottle’s Been Bringing Me Down,” Max Caddy puts a new twist on a ‘Great American Songbook’ classic. Taking a time-honored page out of the folk tradition, this dark tune of woe finds Corina Corina and Jesse O'Neill trading verses and harmonies over a warm guitar and mandolin arrangement inspired by the industrial-age song 'Erie Canal.'

"Growing up in Albany, NY I was steeped in the tradition of folk music at a young age," says songwriter Jesse O'Neill. "Erie Canal was always one of my favorites. How many songs namedrop my hometown? But it felt disingenuous to be singing about building canals with my mule because I live in modern day New York City. So I adapted that haunting melody into a personal story that a lot of people can relate to: The shameful pull of alcohol."

"This song is the perfect introduction to Max Caddy," says vocalist Corina Corina. "It's timeless, and bittersweet and showcases our chemistry as a duo. Not to mention, Jesse and I have done our share of research on the subject matter! it's an instant classic type song that a lot of people will understand at face value as well as on a historical musical level."

lyrics

Bottle’s Been Bringing Me Down

will i learn before it’s too late?
before I make my last mistake
will i learn before it’s too late?
that the bottle’s been bringing me down

drinking and smoking and staying up late
it’s gonna catch up to me i can see it’s gait
worked once or twice now i can’t relate
and the bottle’s been bringing me down

she comes to me she says my friend
i’ll be here with you till the end
you don’t need no other friends
i’m the only one worth having around

she starts out with the softest touch
but with her it’s never enough
i’m pushing back she’s wanting more
she stands up straight pour after pour

i said my prayers and i made my rounds
this goddamn bottle’s still bringing me down
she’s screaming at me i don’t make a sound
float to sea one day i’ll drown

will i learn before it’s too late?
before I make my last mistake
will i learn before it’s too late?
that the bottle’s been bringing me down

down yeah it’s bringing me down
down yeah she’s bringing me down
will i learn before it’s too late?
that the bottle’s been bringing me down
